Women Over 50 Consider Starting A Business To Jump Start Your Career - Work It Daily
Women Over 50 Consider Starting A Business To Jump Start Your Career - Work It Daily How often have you heard that women over 50 are getting left behind in the job market? Related: 10 Tips For Job Seekers Over 50 Whether itâs women who were laid-off mid-career from high-paying corporate jobs during the recession or women who took some years away from the workforce to raise their children â" many report finding it almost impossible to land a job. Turns out, itâs not their imagination. Women over 50 have been disproportionately left behind by todayâs economy, according to a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In a study that compared two-year periods before and after the Great Recession, a far greater percentage of women after the recession had joined the ranks of the long-term unemployed. Whereas in 2006-7, women over 50 accounted for less than a quarter of the long-term unemployed, by 2012-13, they had risen to half the long-term unemployed. Of course, in that same period, the long-term unemployed rose among all age groups. Itâs just that women over 50 were disproportionately affected. Many of these women, highlighted in a recent New York Times article are highly skilled, from experienced attorneys to PhD holders. At least one has been told by employers that theyâre looking for someone younger. So what is a highly experienced, talented person still in the prime of life to do with all she still has to contribute to society? How about embarking on a new business to call your own. Opportunities abound to make money and explore oneâs interests, but one way you may not have considered is in the growing franchise industry, where you can find a business to suit your interests from thousands of franchise companies. By the middle of 2015, franchising grew faster than the rest of the economy for the fifth year in a row, according to a forecast by the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation. Certainly, franchising is a lot more than car dealerships and fast food restaurants. You can find good opportunities in business or personal services. And even if you have no direct experience in the industry, the beauty of franchising is that the operation comes with a support team and training to help you succeed. The best thing of all about starting your own business is that the fruits of your labor go directly to your own pocketbook. No more working your tail off for an employer who, unbeknownst to you or unrelated to your own productivity and success, has decided to cut your department. To make the best match to capitalize on your skills and experience, consider consulting a franchise coach or two who can help you narrow down your options and show you opportunities in fields where new businesses are flourishing. So take control of your career and resolve to start 2016 by investigating your options for owning your own business. Related Posts Think Youâre Ready For A Franchise Discovery Day? 3 Men on Why They Avoid Time Alone With Female Colleagues After #MeToo
3 Men on Why They Avoid Time Alone With Female Colleagues After MeToo Women in the workplace have been making collective strides toward a business environment that includes, empowers and respects them following the MeToo campaign. More women than ever before feel safe reporting the harassment theyve faced in the workplace. As a result, perpetrators of sexual harassment are being fired in droves and women are replacing them.A Morning Consult poll found that nearly two-thirds of both men and women agree that workplace employees should be taking extra caution around the opposite sex in the office, and aelendherbei quarter think that private work-related meetings with colleagues of the opposite sex are downright inappropriate. Another survey from the Center for Talent neuheit suggests that some may not know how to navigate solo interactions. As such, 64 percent of senior men and 50 percent of junior women just avoid alone time with people of the opposite sex at work. But research suggest s that women would benefit from professional private conversations with senior staff, many (if not most) of whom will be men who might serve as advocates and mentors for their male subordinates. If senior male employees refuse to interact with women one on one, and senior leaders inherently lack trust in womens integrity or ability to tell the truth, behauptung precautions could run the risk of hurting womens progression in the workplace. After all, research shows that both being a team playing and establishing genuine rapport with senior staff are two of the perhaps most important contributors to career advancement. Specifically, women with sponsorswho can provide valuable feedback that women statistically receive less than menare mora likely to receive challenging assignments and earn raises, according to a study by the Center for Work-Life Policy. We spoke to men who avoid women in the workplace to understand why they avoid interacting with women at work, despite the harm it does to ensuring gender equality in the workplace. My business partner (also male) and I are very careful when we have one-on-one discussions with ur female employees, says Matthew Ross, the co-owner and COO of discrimination, sexual harassment and retaliation.Ross adds that, to be clear, his my business partner and he do not partake in or condone prejudicial actions towards female employees. Rather, he says that they take these steps to be extra careful given the contentious environment in the United States right now.Men at all levels reported feeling concerned about misunderstandings, accusations, rumors or more that could jeopardize their careers.I try to avoid being alone with women at my work because of everything thats happened recently I dont want my words or actions to be taken for something theyre not, says Erjan, an information security analyst. I wouldnt say I avoid women. But I dont feel comfortable being in a situation when no one else is around. If I need to talk with a fem ale colleague one on one, Ill just grab a meeting room, and since they all have glass walls, it helps. If one of those rooms isnt available, perhaps we grab lunch somewhere in a public place where we can still talk and hear each other. And one business owner reported that his company does not hold one-on-one meetings with anyone no matter their gender and that they have tried to build a company culture based on respect.I own a small business-to-business advertising agency where we strive to treat all employees with equal respect but we do make sure that were careful in what we say and how we act, especially to and around women in the workplace, says the owner. That said, since we dont have so many one-on-one conversations with women in private settings, we also dont have these conversations with men in the same settings. Because our team is very gender balanced, we really have pretty mixed meetings. We try to treat everyone equally and hold everyone to the same standards. But, of course, theres always room to improve. While these policies are often intended to respond to the MeToo movement in a positive way, men must consider what impact their actions or inactions have on womens careers and consider why they have anxieties around false reporting, which is incredibly rare. Understanding biases around our understanding of sexual assault is a strong next step in embracing MeToo.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel. 3 Key Benefits Your Virtual Interview Tool Isnt Giving You
3 Key Benefits Yur Virtual Interview Tool Isnt Giving YouHere at Spark Hire, were excited so many companies use virtual interviews during their hiring process. In fact, more than half of the organizations that participated in our latest research conducted with HR.com report using video interviews. And only 2 percent of those companies that tried video interviews said they were unsuccessful.Regardless of whether youve added video technology to your hiring process yet, its time to let you in on a secret you can get more out of virtual interviews. By using a dedicated video interview platform instead of a video chat tool you get a valuable resource that provides more information about candidates and improves your hiring process for everyone involved. Here are three benefits unique to dedicated video interview platforms our research with HR.com uncoveredBetter anwender experienceThe intent behind a products design is the foundation for its user experience. Skype and other standard vide o chat platforms were created to enable users to carry on conversations with family and friends. Yes, it is possible to conduct video interviews with these tools, but that is not their primary purpose. As a result, there are certain aspects of the user experience that suffer. Our previously mentioned research revealed only 40 percent of respondents who use Skype-like platforms have a good or excellent experience with the technology. Comparatively, 78 percent of users who use a dedicated video interview platform report a good or excellent experience. Take technical support, for instance. When a video call drops while youre catching up with a friend, its annoying but not costly. When it happens during a virtual interview, it wastes time, valuable resources, and hurts both parties impressions of each other. Dedicated video interview platforms are designed with the importance of each call in mind. They let you and the candidate check connectivity and other technical issues before the in terview, so everything goes off without a hitch. Instead of worrying about potential tech problems, you can focus on what youre an expert at, assessing talent.78% of videointerview users who have a dedicated platform have an excellent experience.Click To TweetHuge time savingsThe purpose of most technology is to make life easier and save time. Virtual interviews allow you to quickly evaluate candidates without bringing them into the office. In fact, our research showed 62 percent of virtual interview users lowered their time-to-hire. But using a dedicated platform takes time-saving one step further.First, one-way video interviews are an efficient initial screening feature, through which candidates record responses to a few questions you are able to review, at a convenient time for you, in under 15 minutes. Additionally, the scheduling feature of video interview platforms saves time by eliminating back-and-forth communication. Instead of sending candidates a few options about your av ailability and waiting hours or days for their reply, you simply send a link where they binnensee every option open to them. In a matter of minutes, they are able secure a time slot that fits into both of your schedules.Video interview platforms save time by making talent sourcing easier and more efficient. Even if a candidate isnt right for your current vacancy, they could be perfect for a future role. Dedicated video interview platforms allow you to revisit past candidates virtual interviews before spending time sourcing new talent. Yet, according to our research, only 22 percent of video interview users are currently building up a talent library. If you start using a dedicated platform, it will put you ahead when competing for talent.Improved candidate experienceIt doesnt matter how efficient your hiring process is if candidates dont have a good experience. If they complete the hiring process feeling disrespected, frustrated, or undervalued, they wont accept your job offer. Plus, what they say to other job seekers about their experience will damage your employer brand.Luckily, our research revealed less than 10 percent of candidates disliked their experience with virtual interviews. When you make the most out of a video interview platform, you impress candidates even more. For instance, these platforms have features that allow you to incorporate your company logo, colors, and branding material. When candidates see customized communications and pages during the hiring process, it deepens their connection with your organization. While its a great opportunity to provide more information about your organization, our research showed only 14 percent of users see virtual interviews for their branding potential.Candidates dont want to be involved in a lifeless hiring process. They want to get excited about your organizations personality and values. Dedicated video interview platforms allow you to customize how the platform looks, so they have a richer candidate expe rience.Only 14% of videointerview users are utilizing the platforms employerbranding features.Click To TweetUsing virtual interviews is an integral part of your hiring process. But if you want to get the most out of your strategy, you need a dedicated video interview platform. Its features which are specifically for hiring will improve how you attract and assess candidates.___
